FOSS Field Trip

This is the post excerpt.

For my FOSS Field Trip, I searched for projects related to medicine, and chose to investigate HeatmapGenerator, which creates customized gene expression heatmaps.  The project is somewhat active – the (lone) developer responded to a ticket from a few months ago, and there have been two releases in the last year.  The languages used for this project (C++, R, OpenGL) are not a good fit for our Java-based curriculum.  Since there is only one developer, I suspect that he may not welcome contributions from students.  The domain is also difficult for students with no background in genetics and biostatistics.  I chose this project based on the relatively high number of downloads and positive reviews from users, but it does not seem well suited for use in our senior seminar.

And here is my evaluation of the suitability of OpenMRS for supporting classroom use: OpenMRS_Evaluation
